Assessing the Effectiveness of the Plastic Ban in the City of Bangalore in Addressing the Market Failure Associated with It

Abstract: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Solid Waste Management (BBMP-SWM) Bye-laws, 2019 was passed by the BBMP in 2019 to ensure proper waste management in the city alongside new rules on the consumption of plastic. According to the Karnataka state plastic board, every citizen, on an average, consumes 16kgs of plastic every month. The extended essay aims towards answering the question “To what extent has the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Solid Waste Management (BBMP-SWM) Bye-laws, 2019 helped in reducing the negative externalities caused by the overconsumption of single-use plastic.” This study will be examining the effects of this law on the production and consumption of single-use plastics. Through this policy, the BBMP aims to revise the 2016 Karnataka State plastic Ban and enforce it in a stricter manner. This topic is significant as an estimated 20% of the 4000-tonne waste produced by the city consists of plastic. Plastics are not biodegradable, which increases pollution. Through this ban, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike aims to reduce the external cost caused by reducing plastic consumption. Even if the plastic is marked as “recyclable” over 90% of the plastic is never actually recycled. India has been generating over 3.5 million tonnes of plastic every year. In 2017, plastic resulted in over 2.3 million premature deaths in India because of this, India made it onto the top 10 list along with China and The United States. Hence, the topic is of significant investigation. Over the years, there have been a lot of plastic bans implemented by the government. The most recent one is the Central plastic ban of 2021. Single use plastic does not biodegrade, it breaks down into smaller microplastics which continue polluting the environment.

Abstract: This short paper, draws on 40 years of research and advisory work, rather than a single, short-term, finite research project. It examines recent and current examples of urban housing policies, programmes and projects in a wide range of countries in both the Global North and South in its aim order to meet its aim to stimulate and contribute to the search for strategic approaches to the production, maintenance and management of urban low-income group housing; it examines the historical, geographic, cultural/political and economic contexts within which they are set, laying some emphasis on the prevailing existential threats to humanity caused by: (1) global heating, and (2) the pandemic pervasiveness of viral pathogen transmissions and their social, economic and legislative impact on physical settlement planning and management. Emphasis is given to distinguishing between ‘public housing’, for which all governing decisions are unilaterally made by relevant state agencies and institutions, and ‘social housing’, in which non-governmental beneficiary households and enterprises, communities and organisations are engaged in risk- and benefit-sharing partnership with responsible state agencies at all levels of the governance and management of affordable and accessible urban housing. The paper concludes by drawing attention to the urgency of need to build the capability of the extensive range of actors and stake-holders, worldwide and calling for the initiation and dissemination of successful policy approaches and their administration.

Abstract: Vietnam is a developing country with many remarkable achievements. However, in recent years, economic and social development in Vietnam still relies heavily on the exploitation of natural resources; labor productivity is still low; production technology and consumption models still use a lot of energy and raw materials and emit a lot of waste. Vietnam's development process is facing many severe challenges, with potential risks of unsustainable development such as climate change, environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, etc. Therefore, Vietnamese firms need to be aware that economic development is always associated with environmental protection activities and social responsibility. This study is conducted to investigate the impact level of the disclosure of sustainable development of Vietnamese listed firms. The study determines the impact of board of directors on the level of sustainable development information disclosure of these firms. Data was collected from annual reports, corporate sustainability reports, management reports, and financial reports of 345 firms in 2023. The results reveal that the level of disclosure of sustainable development of Vietnamese listed firms is low, no firm discloses 100% fully, some firms do not publish sustainable development information. The findings also show that the level of mandatory disclosure of sustainable development is higher than the level of voluntary disclosure of sustainable development. The research results show that The board of directors factors do not impact the level of mandatory disclosure of sustainable development. There are four determinants related to the board of directors that impact the level of voluntary disclosure of sustainable development, including board size, board independence, the proportion of foreign BOD members, the chairman-cum-CEO have a positive impact (in the same direction) on the level of disclosure of sustainable development. Based on the findings, several recommendations are proposed for promoting the disclosure of sustainable development information on the side of Vietnamese listed firms.

Abstract: This article aims to, essentially, analyse the perspective of different scientific works on the influence of productive competitiveness on the development of regions in their different scales. This systematic literature review study was based on around 103 works published on themes about the competitiveness and productivity of the regions present in the Scopus database. Zotero and VOSViewer software were used to manage the database of this investigation, allowing not only the qualitative organization of key contents, but also the mapping of existing authors and linkages in terms of co-occurrences. The methodology used allowed exploring the different conceptual establishments that seek to relate productivity with the competitiveness of the regions and vice versa. As a criterion for the inclusion of works and consequent analysis, conceptual review studies on territorial competitiveness with a geographic economic focus were chosen, extracted from the Scopus database. This review also made it possible to extract the main accessible meanings in the keywords of seminal authors in studies of this nature, research trends in terms of interests in the development of studies that seek to explore competitive capacity of regions in recent years, as well as studies on the capabilities of regions tending to specialization, innovation, valuation of intellectual (human) and territorial capital and sustainability.
